Birding (and listing) has given a whole new meaning to New Year’s Day. I can’t wait for morning so I can start my year list, and never fail to disappoint certain people by going to bed before midnight. This year, I woke up in southeast Florida before sunrise with the thought, “Everything old is new!”. I  drove 50 minutes to the Deering Estate in Miami, where I joined 40 other birders in a search for the Key West Quail-Dove, a rare bird that had been sighted by Miami birder Rangel Diaz on the estate several days previously. I had already seen the Quail-Dove on a previous outing, but that was in 2014.

The bird was in a restricted area of the estate, which didn’t open till 10am. We trooped in across the estate, where we could vaguely see Biscayne Bay through mist, through a locked gate, and down a path of what David LaPuma told me is one of the only patches of pristine, original, Florida  habitat in this part of the state. The scouts had not seen the bird yet, but with 40 pairs of birder eyes it was soon found on the OTHER side of the path from its usual sojourns. Imagine that.

Key West Quail-Dove

I wish I could say this was my very first bird of the year, and since I drove down in darkness it almost was, but I couldn’t close my eyes to a Red-bellied Woodpecker in the parking lot or three White Ibis winging overhead as we walked past the avocado grove. But, Key West Quail-Dove for the third bird of the year is a pretty good beginning!

So why, you may be wondering, is the header photo for this post a Roseate Spoonbill and not a Quail-Dove? That QD was impossible to photograph, at least for me. When it was still, it blended so much into the forest that it looked like a rock or part of the leaf litter. When it moved, it stepped in and out of leaf litter, behind trees, under branches. The photo above is the only one I got that even had an image of the bird. I had to lie on my belly and twist my body in contortions to get a clear-ish view. And, this was only after a very nice birder got up from the ground to make room for me. The photo is highly cropped, denoised, and contrasted. After I left the Deering Estate, with many other birders, the Quail-Dove ventured out of the forest and gave great photo ops. It’s not the first time I’ve been a sacrificial birder. (Another example being the NYC Couch’s Kingbird, which disappeared as soon as I started for home.)

Bunche Beach

Bunche Beach, early morning

This Roseate Spoonbill was one of the great birds I saw in Florida during the first two weeks of the year.  I took a roundabout route driving home, going west to Fort Myers and Bunche Beach, north to Fort Desoto, which I’ve never birded before (and dipped on the Groove-billed Ani), then east to Merritt Island and north to my friend Victoria’s house and her yard full of feeders. In South Carolina, the cold hit. It was time, I knew, to get home and start looking at winter birds. And, typing up this post.

I like the goal articulated by Clare M.:  “to have fun birding”. This seems so fundamental, yet I find it sometimes gets lost in my efforts to find one particular bird. And, the birding spirits must know that, because when it isn’t fun, then I usually do not get the “tick.”  So, for 2015, the goals are (1) to have fun birding and (2) to take better photographs.

Notes on the list:  This list is in eBird order (until the AOU changes that order). Bolded names are life birds; italicized names are ABA birds; species not on the ABA Checklist will be listed separately. Links are to photographs or my own blog entries. If a bird is listed as “heard only”, it is a species that I have already seen and counted as a life bird. One change is that photos may not be of the first bird of the year, but they will be of birds seen in 2015.

Written by Donna
Having been attached to books all her life, Donna Lynn Schulman is thrilled to be engaged in a passion that requires fealty to an information artifact called a “field guide.” A former labor educator and labor relations library director at two large universities, Donna also reviewed books for Library Journal for 15 years (totaling over 100 titles), and has contributed articles on to academic journals and monographs. She wrote her first birding book review for the Queens County Bird Club’s News & Notes, which she formerly edited, and also reviews books for Birding magazine. Donna discusses birding books with Nate Swick and other members of the Birding Book Club on the American Birding Association Podcast several times a year, including the popular Best Birding Books of The Year. When she is not birding in Queens or working on her nature photography, Donna travels to Los Angeles, where she attempts to turn her granddaughter into a birder.
