When I’m on a boat dedicated to birding, like I was on Sunday, I love spending time at the back photographing the birds that come into the chum scrum. Birds in flight are always fun to photograph and birds in flight that stay near your lens are even better. The backgrounds offered by water and sky often add to the image and the tendency of gulls to have lots of white plumage make exposure a challenge, but not one too difficult to make overcoming it a chore. It’s easy to rattle off several hundred shots in a very short amount of time and while I didn’t go completely overboard I did take quite a few shots of the Herring Gulls that were the most prevalent bird in our miniature chum scrum.

These birds are, of course, American Herring Gulls Larus smithsonianus, not their European Herring Gull cousins. Enjoy these shots and get out on a boat if you have a chance!
