Saving your Pennies for the Peterson Auction?

Roger Tory Peterson (1908-1996), legendary artist, naturalist, and Great Man of American birding, left a rich legacy. His philosophical legacy lies in the countless ramblers and rovers inspired to identify an unknown bird, bug, or blossom using one of his popular field guides or their successors. Peterson’s artistic legacy resides in the plates of those selfsame eponymous volumes. However, Peterson’s prolific nature guaranteed that plenty of works would be left behind for acolytes and aficionados alike. If you don’t have a piece of original Peterson art, now is your chance!

On September 8th, Guernsey’s Auction House will auction hundreds of original paintings, drawings and photographs by Roger Tory Peterson. The auction will be held at the Arader Gallery in NYC. Prints by John James Audubon, who needs no introduction, will be offered as well.

Bidders will be able to participate in the event by bidding online, but attending the event in person will undoubtedly be more enjoyable. Will you be laying down some cash for a piece of the Peterson legacy?

I visited the auction site and looked through all the offernings. lovel stuff. I kept hoping to find something that didn’t have a starting bid of $300, but couldn’t. Even the starting bids are too rich for my blood. Unfortunately. At least I still have my RTP signed fieldguide (that never leaves the bookshelf).
