In a month that contained the eBird Big Day, we can naturally expect that the beats have been racing about providing much fodder for the collaborative list. The two most prolific contributors, Pat and Tom, have been sharing their birding space in Costa Rica. Tom’s own list continues apace Those of us who have tried to do a big year know how tough it gets on the homeward stretch and will be rooting for him.
It is also a month when the Law of Diminishing Returns over-took itself. The beats have now contributed more checklists than birds. This is inevitable even when the beats are so spread out. The equanimity occurred as the two totals passed 3560.
During October, 7 countries (Costa Rica, Australia, USA, India, Hong Kong, UK, Serbia) were birded by 11 beats who shared 135 checklists and noted 697 species. The Year list has reached 2176 and the life total has nudged forward to 3560 with the sighting of a a Scarlet Myzomela by Grant and Clare.
