Mid-November… what a waste! Around here, this weekend is good for Thanksgiving prep and not much else. November in Rochester feels like a gray cloud, a miasma that dulls the senses until extreme cold brings sobering clarity and boreal rarities. Obviously, I don’t hold out much hope of birding excitement this weekend, but hope to find something fun anyway. Corey will likely be checking out local birds, getting back into the whole Queens rather than Ecuador thing. However, if the famous Fork-tailed Flycatcher sticks around, he might try to find his way to Connecticut and see it! Charlie will be working around is home again as well, realizing that, nice as it is, it would be lovely to go somewhere else…

I’ll be birding around Stockton, CA. This weekend is the Central Valley Birding Club’s 14th Annual symposium. It is a great event that draws birders from all over California. With all the trips going out there are usually a few local rarities found. http://www.cvbs.org/
I could gloat about how it is spring at the moment down here, but the weather is supposed to be shocking this weekend. I probably won’t have much time to birds, although I am going to look for rafting shearwaters in Wellington Harbour.
Iona tomorrow, Reifel Sunday: November is really good in British Columbia so far! Out for the first day with my private group this morning; lots of Harlequin Ducks, Black Oystercatchers, a Long-tailed Duck, and (best of all) a Slate-colored Junco. An American Dipper was a nice surprise.
I’ll be checking out Alice Springs Sewage ponds (NT, Australia) for newly arrived siberian waders as well as our resident ‘hotties’ such as Red-necked Avocet and Australian Pratincole…
I will be chasing that Fork-tailed Flycatcher for sure tomorrow!

I’m not so much birding as trying to keep up with our deer and blue jays! They empty the feeders so quickly.

At the moment, I’m stuck inside because of our heavy snowfall in Salt Lake City, UT! However, I did have an American kestrel staking out prey on my 5th floor balcony. Pretty cool! I’m hoping for Cassin’s this week.
