As we approach a long holiday season, birders’ thoughts turn to more than just meals and merriment. Songs of turtledoves and swans a’swimming are not far off, but we in the U.S. have our minds on turkeys right about now.
A mundane weekend makes for mundane birds, so I had to settle for watching House Sparrows chew through my feeders. Plenty of other species stopped by, of course, but they were sorely outnumbered. Speaking of mundane, Corey got out and about both mornings of the weekend but without seeing anything spectacular. In the parking lot of a shopping plaza, however, he saw a Peregrine Falcon come plunging out of nowhere to absolutely obliterate a Rock Pigeon. If was amazing, if somewhat sad for the pigeon. So sad, in fact, that Corey decided to honor that pigeon’s memory by making it his Best Bird of the Weekend.
