Wow. What an amazing year for birding and traveling in the year 2013! I recorded a personal best of 1,587 species across only four countries: United States, Jamaica, Brazil, and Thailand. I finally made it out to Arizona, which felt like a rite of passage for any birder in the ABA area. I had the amazing experience of living and guiding in the Amazon for several months at the famous and beautiful Cristalino Lodge of Brazil. Finally, to celebrate my 30th birthday, I made my way to Thailand — my first ever visit to the Asian continent and an eye-opening experience I will never forget.

My other goal in 2013 was to add every single year bird I see into eBird — fait accompli.

What are my goals this year as a birder? I will place no short term targets for 2014 on the table (although 2015 will be a different matter all together, I hope). I do hope to reach my 3,000th world bird this year, but that seems to be a tall order at the moment:

  • Current Life List: 2838
  • Current ABA Life List: 589
  • Current Florida list: 388
  • 2014 World Year List: 631 (as of 15 Dec)
  • 2014 Life Bird Tally: +82 species (as of 15 Dec)
  • 2014 Life Bird Family Tally: +0 families (as of 15 Dec)

January Highlights: the year kicked off in Thailand at the shore of the Mekong River near Chiang Saen in search of River Lapwing. It was an incredibly foggy morning, and I did not see my first bird of the year until 9AM or so in the form of a Common Kingfisher. Andy Walker (my travel companion) and I also took a boat trip on Chiang Saen Lake to see various wintering waterfowl, including a pair of vagrant Long-tailed Duck — only the second record for Thailand. We ended the first day of the year at a massive harrier roost at sunset, watching hundreds of Pied and Eastern Marsh-Harriers swirling downwards into the marsh for the night. We parted ways the next day, as I made my way to the Similan Islands to see one of my bucket list birds — Nicobar Pigeon. Back home in Miami by the end of the month, I drove up to Gainesville to see Calliope and Black-chinned Hummingbirds (both new for my Florida state list) and socialize at the Space Coast Birding Festival in Titusville.

Similan Islands

Tropical island paradise? Lots of people seem to think so considering the number of visitors!

February and March Highlights: these months have had me focusing more on birding in southern Florida, with most of the species seen during this time being the norm for this time of year except for three Mangrove Cuckoos seen in mid-February at a preserve near Matheson Hammock County Park. This species isn’t usually recorded in the winter months, as they are only supposed to become vocal sometime in April. Excited to see spring arrive!

April and May Highlights: Spring migration was very good in southern Florida this year, with unexpected surprises such as Kentucky WarblerHooded Warbler, and Rose-breasted Grosbeak that I would usually expect to see during fall migration. Connecticut WarblerWhite-rumped Sandpiper, and Bahama Mockingbird were probably the most unusual sightings that I probably won’t get again this year.

June, July, and August Highlights: Although these are traditionally the birding doldrums in southern Florida, I still had some excited birding this summer. The summer season kicked off with an invitation from Elsa Alvear to help with a pelagic at Biscayne National Park. We even added a new bird to the national park list: Wilson’s Storm-Petrel! A Smooth-billed Ani at Virginia Key was a nice year tick. These are now annual vagrants to the southern tip of the state. A Red-necked Stint discovered in the lower keys was an even better ABA/Florida sighting. I also recorded several early warblers in late July such as Prothonotary Warbler.

September Highlights: September and October are my favorite months to bird in southern Florida. By consistently covering Kendale Lakes Park near my home, I have been able to record several surprisingly uncommon migrants such as Nashville WarblerChestnut-sided Warbler, and Blackburnian Warbler along with good numbers of the more common migrant species. However, the true highlight of September was my trip to Honduras with Chris Lotz of Birding Ecotours (www.birdingecotours.com). During this trip, we recorded a fantastic variety of high profile species such as Tody MotmotLovely CotingaHonduran Emerald, and Wine-throated Hummingbird. Pico Bonito Lodge is absolutely gorgeous, and I highly recommend to add this lodge to your bucket list of potential birding destinations.

October, November, December…: A trickle of migrants, a new Florida state bird (Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher), and a non-birding trip to California made it an interesting trio of months to finish the year. 2014 already finds itself taking a back seat as I plan my birding for 2015.

Below is my list of birds for 2014 by family, following the latest Clements list. Species which are year highlights (such as rarely seen, highly anticipated, or outstanding species) will be marked in RED:

A native of southern Florida, Carlos Sanchez has had a fascination with wildlife as far back as he can remember combined with an unquenchable thirst to learn -- the first books he checked out of the library were Beehler's "Birds of New Guinea" and Stiles and Skutch's "Birds of Costa Rica." Despite his parent's belief that he would 'grow out of it,' Carlos's passion has never wavered, and he has dabbled in everything from bird art to taxonomy. His passion has interwoven with his interest in travel, having birded extensively throughout the United States, eastern Australia, Thailand and Ecuador along with shorter jaunts to other locales such as Puerto Rico and Jamaica. In 2013, Carlos was a resident naturalist and birding guide at Cristalino Lodge in Brazil. If you would like to make a trip to southern Florida in search of Caribbean specialties, exotics, or general birding, please visit www.ecoavian.com to inquire about his guiding services.
