I really enjoyed the challenge of listing my birds during the last year and although we have kept lists in the past we have never noted the first date each year that we see a bird, so that was a very interesting exercise. Every now and again we would look at our list for a bird that we should have seen, but hadn’t and therefore go looking for it. Sometimes we were successful and sometimes we weren’t, but you never have a bad day birding! All of our sightings last year were on mainland Australia, but who knows what this year might bring! The plans so far are to be in Karratha from 4th January until 22nd January with Grant’s work. This is an industrial town 850kms (530 miles) to the south of Broome along the coast and we don’t have particularly high hopes for seeing many birds that we don’t have in Broome, but we will try! This plan changed when Cyclone Narelle formed off the coast and we came home on the 8th! We then returned to Karratha after the cyclone and our return to Broome was delayed until February 1st. Our next plan is a trip over east to an area that we have not been to before for a month from the beginning of February. This will be a birding and camping holiday, so we should be adding to our list then! Beyond that…who knows! I will not be competing with Redgannet and his jetsetting lifestyle this year, though!

Our Christmas Day list was 124, but we only got to 112 on New Year’s Day and not the same birds! To think you can get over 100 in the first day, but then still only get to 300 by the end of the year says something about the birding in Broome!

Once again for my Australian birds I will use the “Christidis and Boles 2008 key to species names” and list them in the order that they come on that list. For birds listed as “seen in Broome” the location covers an area that is no further than 70kms from the Broome Bird Observatory unless otherwise stated.

If there is a post that I have done that covers any of the species I will attach a link to it. For all my other posts you can click on Clare M.

This was last updated January 1st 2014 and I am happy with what I saw during the year as I had no main goal other than to enjoy birding and record what I saw during the year.

Clare and her husband, Grant, have lived permanently in Broome, Western Australia since 1999 after living in various outback locations around Western Australia and Darwin. She has lived in the Middle East and the United States and traveled extensively in Europe. She monitors Pied Oystercatchers breeding along a 23km stretch of Broome's coastline by bicycle and on foot. She chooses not to participate in social media, but rather wander off into the bush for peace and tranquility. Thankfully she can write posts in advance and get away from technology!
