Redgannet still enjoys the luxury of free international travel and continues to indulge in weekly overseas excursions, so he has had to be fettered before being allowed to submit a year list for 2013. His handicap for this year is that birds will only qualify for the list if they are identified by sound. The reason for this is that his aural birding skills are woefully inadequate and this may be the motivation that he needs to practice and improve.

It can be comical to watch him as he tries to find a singing bird. Deafness in one ear causes him to misinterpret the direction that sound is coming from and he is often to be seen getting very confused and frustrated, looking the wrong way as a bird sings by his shoulder.

He has expressed a long held desire to get to grips with the calls from some of his native birds and hopes to become more familiar with the ones commonly encountered on his travels. A target of 200 entries has been plucked from the air with the goal that at least some of the new skills be retained for next year.

He is currently so inept at making identifications by ear that birds must be subsequently confirmed by sight to qualify. “Heard only “ may count in exceptional circumstances.  Identification need not just be gleaned from calls or singing voice, but may also include other sound clues and mechanical noises such as distinctive wing-beat sounds, drumming etc. A nearby birder saying, “Ooh look, a Chaffinch”, will not be acceptable.

Thank you to www.xeno-canto.org website which has given Redgannet permission to make the links and which will allow readers to experience the calls and sounds for themselves. The links have been selected to give the closest match to what was heard on the day. Xeno-canto has many different vocalisations and a range of sounds to explore for each bird. Other links may be made that link to the Redgannet website where further observation of the sound has been made.

Redgannet worked for more than 35 years as a flight attendant for an international airline. He came to birding late in his career but, considering the distractions, doesn't regret the missed opportunities. He was paid to visit six continents and took full advantage of the chance to bird the world. He adopted the nom de blog, Redgannet, to avoid remonstrations from his overbearing employer, but secretly hoped that the air of mystery would make him more attractive to women. Now grounded, he is looking forward to seeing the seasons turn from a fixed point.
