Most of the birds we regularly communicate with admit that they rarely read ornithological papers, including papers specifically about themselves. Their main objection is that such papers tend to reduce their lives to breeding success, foraging efficiency, and avoiding premature death, while portraying individual birds as mechanistic puppets of hormones and evolution. Several birds have told us that there is more to life than this, though they have so far been unable to provide convincing examples.
They are much more enthusiastic about our series of demotivational posters for birds, which they praise for “providing realistic insights into the daily struggle of avian life.” Their phrasing can sometimes be a bit pompous, but we appreciate the support. So, we keep publishing these posters.
