When a hummingbird book came in for reviewing, our esteemed editor knew the right person to review it. He knows I’m a hummingbird lover. Also, I have been to Arizona four times, looking for birds across the whole state. I was delighted to be able to find 11 of the most common species.

This book is aimed at novice birders in Arizona, who have an interest in hummingbirds. The author begins with pictures and general information about the most common hummingbirds found in Arizona. She adds pictures and descriptions about some rare hummers that can show up at a feeder. Throughout the book, there are other hummer photographs. It would have been good if the author had identified them, especially for readers new to hummingbirds.

There is a section on hummingbird feeding and feeders. The author offers a nectar recipe, tips on feeder placement, how to keep it clean, and how to move feeders farther apart to encourage more birds to visit. Also, the author discusses what makes a hummer-friendly yard. They need shelter, water, cats kept indoors, heated feeders in winter, and native plants.

The importance of native plants is addressed in a whole chapter on gardening. Native plants are always best with colours and flower shapes, which attract hummers. This type of garden will attract other local insects and birds. Homeowners can even have their garden certified by the International Hummingbird Society, which encourages and supports people in creating welcoming hummer habitats.

There is a section on where to find hummers in Arizona, many of which I have visited. If you intend to travel to Arizona, the author recommends some hummer festivals.

As I mentioned above, native gardens can attract other creatures to your yard. The author has added a chapter on butterflies, with accompanying photographs and descriptions about these pretty insects.

The author ends her book with ideas and tips for hummingbird photography. She included recommendations from other photographers on capturing great images of these special, little birds.

As I said at the beginning of my review, if you live in Arizona, are new to birding, and are fascinated by hummingbirds, this may be the book for you.
