white pelicans in the sky

The skies are full today
as I sit by the pond.
A pair of Red-tailed Hawks
screech as they soar
through flocks of Tree Swallows.

Turkey Vultures peruse
odors on the air
looking for their
carrion lunch.

But my eyes follow the big White Pelicans –
bright silhouettes and black wings
as they play on the wind.
Kings
of the clouds.
