Which bird species do you think is the biggest attraction to visitors of your lodge (please only name one species)?
When the flamingos are here, they are definitely a highlight, but we have quite a lot of bird species recorded on the property.

What is the name of your lodge, and since when has your lodge been operating?
Mosaic Lagoon Lodge – opened in 2008, and Maryke De Villiers has been the proud owner since 2019.

How best to travel to your lodge?
Cape Town International is our closest airport, and we can arrange for transfers, but self-drives are also a great way to get to us. We are 7km outside Stanford in the Overberg.

Cape Canary

What kind of services, except for accommodation and food, does your lodge offer to visiting birders?
We have a few activities for our guests to enjoy. A guided nature walk, which is especially great for bird lovers, there is a guided Fynbos Safari, a beach excursion, and a boat trip on the Klein River, which is also great for spotting various birds along the river.
Cape Sparrow

What makes your lodge special?
Our unique setting on the Hermanus Lagoon definitely adds to the charm of the lodge. We are a small, intimate nature lodge where each and every guest is treated as a VIP.
Malachite Kingfisher

What are the 10 – 20 most interesting birds that your lodge offers good chances to see?
Please see the bird list. A note here is that the Lesser Whitethroat stayed with us in 2024 for about 3 months when it got confused on its migration. It was only the 2nd time in history that this bird was spotted in South Africa.

Bokakierie

What is the best time to visit your lodge, and why?
Each season brings its own charm, but Spring and Summer would definitely be the best time to visit.

Is your lodge involved in conservation efforts? If yes, please describe them.
Yes, we form part of the Walker Bay Fynbos Conservancy, where protecting the local Fynbos and the habitat it creates for the various bird species and small game is paramount.
Blue Crane

What other suggestions can you give to birders interested in visiting your lodge?
We do have some guides and one or two binoculars, but best to bring your own. As we are situated in a wetland, good shoes for the wet areas are recommended.
Pied Kingfisher

Do you have activities for non-birders? If so, please describe.
Yes, non-birders can also take part in ANY of the activities on offer as mentioned above, and we also have our lovely Milkwood Spa on the property for extra relaxation.
